Nice quote, but I doubt its veracity. In the process of the human species' evolution from apes, any individual member of the species would have had to participate in the politics of the community in order to eat and for his/her offspring to eat, would have had to be accepted by the group in order to live as one of its members and thereby survive, would have had to bear the distinctive colours, marks, signs and symbols of his/her community in order to be recognized. Eating, drinking, shelter, and clothing may be basic, but they never existed in some sort of state of nature outside of or before a social context, and I suspect they never pre-existed politics, science, art, or religion at all. Politics, after all, is fundamentally about negotiating access to resources, isn't it? Apes do it, and therefore it must have already been present, been part of our makeup when we evolved into humans. Engels seems to be stressing having breakfast before we go to work to the detriment of the social structures and institutions required to put breakfast on our plate to begin with.
