"Life begins at the hop"?
Perhaps a philanphropic XTC fan could buy up all the copies of Mandy Moore's version and make a *cough* 'Sacrificial Bonfire'.
I'll put my hand up and admit that I don't think it's that bad. Her version of the Waterboys classic 'The Whole of the Moon' on the other hand?
Let's just say that *cough* 'And a Bang on the Ear' is too good for her.
I see Andy Partridge occasionally - he's recording his new album at the college I teach at in Swindon. I'll ask him what he thinks (only kidding). He once famously said the following about the town I live in and love to hate:
"Swindon is averageville," he explains. "I don't actually like the place very much. Whenever I've got enough money to move out, something seems to come along and take it away. But I do like the idea that it's given me something to kick against. It's the anvil you get to harden stuff up on. I live in a town full of very mundane people who are just apathetic. And it's so enraging, it keeps the batteries topped up."
Jools,
You've shared the same space as Andy Partidge? Christ, I'm breaking out in a cold sweat in jealousy at the very thought.
A factoid about myself: I've only read the Communist Manifesto twice, but I've read Chris Twomey's biography of XTC, 'XTC: Chalkhills & Children', four times. This shouldn't surprise readers of this blog.
Hope the good people of Swindon are recovering from the tragic loss of Dennis Wise. He left them too young.
This is perhaps the most horrifying Halloween trick - cold-blooded murder of a great song!
Malcolm,
don't got near Mandy's version of 'Whole of the Moon'. It may kill you.
Darren--
Ask Martin about the XTC convention we attended in Timperley many years ago, with special guest John Leckie and host Frank Sidebottom. It was class!
string her up!
Anyway, who the fuck is she? And don't say "Mandy Moore"!
Reidski,
She was very good in Saved and a couple of episodes of Scrubs and Entourage.
Cheers
Look on the bright side:
1) you can tell it's a great song even here
2) she is cute
3) she has this interesting 1970's TOTP teenybopper look going on. What's with that?
