World Cup Sayings #5

"I've taken a penalty against Paul Robinson and I can tell you he's a big unit." Alan Shearer, BBC Sport TV

Alan Shearer maintains footballing grudges even in retirement and carries them with him into the pundit chair.

I know that I'm supposed to gloat about Trevorland getting knocked out by Portugal, but Rooney was unfairly dismissed, Hargreaves was outstanding and I had set my heart on them getting beat on penalties in the final.

A France/Germany final, please.

No gloating about that team getting through. What an utterly pishy game of football that was. But, "Rooney unfairly dismissed"? Are you out of your fucking tiny left-wing mind? He stamped on the bloke's bollocks, ffs!! Not even his team-mates defended him. Anyway, it was the best thing to happen to England cos suddenly they played when he went off. As for Portugal .. embarrassing that a team who had no-one (Pauletta is a no-one) up front have got to the semi finals.

And totally agree with you on Hargreaves - what a superb fighting performance. The only reason he gets a bad press over here is cos the press don't watch anything other than English Premiership football, which we can now say with authority is vastly over-rated.

leave my tiny mind out of this. ;-)

I still think the decision was harsh, 'cos I'm still not completely convinced that he meant it. Granted I saw in a replay, so I might be wrong but it's probably a case of my heart ruling me head: I really wanted Rooney to have a good World Cup.

Btw, out of curiousity. Was there a point in the coverage back in Blighty where the cameras suddenly picked out the comedian Sean Lock in the crowd? (They had previously picked out Mick Jagger in the crowd at an earlier point in the game.)

I'm curious if the cameraperson/director knew who he was, or just decided to do a crowd close up, and opted for a geeky guy with NHS specs wearing an England shirt.

Nah, that wasn't Sean Lock, that was Fat Boy Freddie from the Five Bells in New Cross!

Anyway, can we start here a best and worst player of the tournament competition?

Best: ZZ (hope I'm that good when I'm 34)
Worst: Lampard/Costa Rica back four/Czech Republic starting XI

But, also, most anonymous: Ronaldinho - did he actually touch the ball tonight?

Totally agree on the matter of Lampard. The most consistent player all season - previous two seasons - and he disappears when it comes to the World Cup.

Also agree that Zidane was magnifique today. And also have to acknowledge Tony Hadley's contribution to Germany getting to the semi final. Loved his goal against Argentina.

I like that I've got someone else to hate with a passion after that game now.

Who you think it is?
