When Old Wave Met New Wave #2

Another trivial factoid of the day:

Billy Joel considered his 1980 album, Glass Houses "as a reply to punk in general, and The Jam's second album This Is the Modern World in particular."

And I'm sure his We Didn't Start The Fire is a reply to REM's It's The End Of The World As We Know It - nah, wait, not a reply, just a pure fucking rip-off!

And btw, don't think we're convinced about that Fall/Rod Stewart thing - you put that on there!!

Sadly it looks increasingly like Billy and his ilk had the last word. Tcha! What are the youth of the day coming to? Just listen to the music they play...all this Coldplay and Keane and Snow Patrol...They've got tunes, they can play their instruments - and you can even hear what they're singing about! (muttermutter).

Incidentally...I've been listening to Fall Heads Roll. fucking brilliant. Plus, I was moved to write this the other day.

Have to be honest here: I actually like Billy Joel.

I think the bloke has written some wonderful songs, but the blog post was less a case of me opining that Joel was some sad old wanker, but more a case of me being genuinely surprised that Joel, who was massive at the time, would take the time out to write a musical riposte to what was, by common consent, The Jam's dodgiest album.

Weller just can't help getting up people's noses. ;-)

PS - I'm going through a Fall phase myself at the moment. Currently reading Mark E. Smith and Mick Middles biog of the band, and I'm loving it.
