. . . with chips and gravy

I'm thinking of you and the things you do to me
That makes me love you, now I'm living in ecstasy
Hey, it's you and the things you do to me
That makes me love you, now I'm living in ecstasy

How the hell did I forgot this culinary delight? I must have ate enough of them down the years that I'd be sweating the gravy out of my pores on a hot New York afternoon.
Just googled. I can't find them anywhere in New York. Not even at Tea and Sympathy. There's an online store trying to sell them for nearly five dollars! The whole point about Fray Bentos pies were that they were both cheap and nutritious.
I'll need to go find me Brooklyn's Uruguayan community and befriend someone under false pretences.
Hat tip to someone on Urban 75 for providing me with the instant foodie flashback.
Lest we forget:

"Sad little men? He's thrown a kettle over a pub. What have you done?"

Genius.

Never could stand Fray Bentos. Was more into my Findus Crispy Pancakes.

Talking about "good bad food", and big props to Stuart for Findus Crispy Pancakes, do you guys in the states still get Vesta Curry and Chow Mein? (Naomi Klein eat your heart out.)

Vesta Curry and Chow Mein?

I don't think so. It might be like in the case of Irn Bru where the US Food and Drug Agency refuse to let them have an import license because of the crap in the ingredients.

There are a couple of dedicated British restaurants/stores in the NYC area. I usually nip into the Chip Shop in Park Slope, Brooklyn, for marmite, baked beans and overpriced HP Sauce. There's also Tea and Sympathy in Greenwich Village but it's overpriced, their Cornish Pasties are undersized and I suspect that the blokes who work there are all Chelsea fans.

I mention Vesta meals- and internet research suggests, incredibly, that they are still being manufactured - because I cannot believe that the "meat" they contained could possibly have any ingredient that might worry a vegan. I wouldn't eat them on that basis, you understand, but they are a memory. Not sure sure its a fond one. Noodles you fried in a chip pan?
