day 29 - a song from your childhood
It's only from watching BBC4's repeats of 1976 episodes of Top of the Pops in recent weeks that I realised that this song is indelibly scorched into my memory bank from when I was a kid.
I still think it's catchy after all these years, Owen tries to copy the choreography and if it weren't for the fact that Kara's eight months pregnant she'd leap from the window screaming in horror.
A real family friendly tune.

The first two songs I can consciously remember listening to were both played a lot on Radio Caroline when I used to listen to it on an old Valve Radio my dad gave me; they were "The Days of Pearly Spencer" (I can't even remember who did that), and "Ain't nothing but a Houseparty" by The Showstoppers. Check that one out.
David McWilliams did Pearly Spencer apparently. And now I need to check if those two were before or after "Lily the Pink" and "Urban Spaceman". Once saw the Scaffold live in Bolton shortly after all their triumphs. They were mainly a comedy group, with poetry and the odd song.
Checked them both out. 'Fraid The Showstoppers didn't do it for me.
Of course, I know Marc Almond's version of 'The Days of Pearly Spencer', and after checking out McWilliams version I guess I'm still sticking with Marc, even though his version is pretty much a note by note cover version.
I'm like that with different versions of the same song. Nine times out of ten I'll always prefer the first version I heard.
Btw, now that you've reminded me, 'Lily The Pink' could have been my most hated song. Even as a kid I knew it was a wrong 'un, novelty record or not.
I'll never forgive Marc Almond for what he did to "Tainted Love". Mind you, there's currently an even worse version airing on an advert in the UK. I was thinking of nominating it for your "a song that makes you cry" (for the wrong reason) category. The Showstoppers were the brothers of some famous soul man - Ben E King or the like. I only remember these things, I don't say they are good. The Scaffold were very funny in concert, but then again, they didn't sing a lot.
The Showstoppers were Solomon Burke's brothers.
There's a version of Tainted Love on youtube by the Pussycat Dolls. I can't click it because I'm afraid watching it might scare me for life.
