Priestley on Air
BBC Radio 4 logo
BBC Radio 4
First broadcast: Sat 15th Nov 2003, 20:00 on BBC Radio 4 FM
Twenty years afterthe death of JB Priestley-essayist, playwright, bestselling author, and broadcaster- playwright Alan Plater examines his life and legacy. Priestley first came to public attention for his 1929 novel The Good Companions. During the Second World War he became famous for his popular radio broadcasts Postscript to the News and later hosted a series of influential conversations with leading scientific thinkers of postwar Britain. However, he was troubled by his celebrity status, for he was popularly acclaimed more for his radio programmes than for what he considered to be his greatest work- his series of plays in which he explored theories of time and destiny. The description from the Radio Times sadly does not give over the full flavour of the documentary. Worth checking out for yourself on YouTube.
