The reviews are from when the book was originally published - 1978 - so I'll cut them some slack. And they are not totally shitting all over it. They like Price's way with dialogue and how he captures the nitty gritty of New York, but they've also pegged it as cliched.
And, as I'm reading nearly 40 years later, I'm obviously getting something different from it.
